Marathon Power Will Keep You
Up and Running During The Next Blackout!
|
A
"Massive" Power Outage Hits Parts of Southwest
USA and Mexico on Thursday, September 8th, 2011, shortly
before 4pm PST, leaving more than 5 million people facing
a chaotic and confusing time. People were literally left
in the dark about what was going on until power was restored
several hours later. |

Many
cities in Southern California, Arizona, and Mexico
were brought to an abrupt and, in many cases, dangerous
standstill after a 500-kilovolt high-voltage transmission
line from Arizona to California failed, triggering
a cascade of events that then knocked the San Onofre
nuclear power plant offline, the major power source
for the region.
Blacked-out traffic lights and clogged freeways created
an immediate massive gridlock across San Diego during
rush hour traffic. The Police department called in
off-duty officers to direct and monitor problem areas.
Left with no safety and traffic control signals, the
city trolley system and passenger and commercial trains
were forced into an immediate shut down, leaving thousands
of commuters affected.
Emergency services were overwhelmed with hundreds
of calls from trapped passengers in elevators, traffic
accident victims, and many others facing challenging
situations. Even some hospitals made the safety decision
to implement emergency lockdowns, frustrating and
frightening many.
The power failure also led to silent radio stations,
flight cancellations, school and public service closures,
and suspended water in some areas. It threw a wrench
in the everyday life of a modern society that is heavily
dependent on electricity forcing businesses, stores,
and restaurants to temporarily close their doors.
Officials said that 1.4 million people were affected
in residential and commercial areas and were without
power throughout the night and into Friday. Many similar
stories were happening across other areas of California,
Arizona and Mexico.
The consequences of poor power quality are estimated
to cost $25 billion every year in the US.
Marathon Power can provide effective and immediate
solutions for crises such as this. They are a manufacturer
of uninterruptible
power systems (UPS), providing products and custom
solutions that assure that emergency power is available
from a few seconds to several hours after any power
outage.
Their solutions protect from equipment lock-ups and
resets, circuit board and component failures, and
loss of data, work and production, therefore avoiding
costly downtime. They currently offer several types
of battery backup products ranging from conventional
models such as the Vault,
Track
and the Sprint
Series to unique products such as the battery-less
SuperCapacitor
UPS and the ruggedized Traffic
Control UPS – between them, they provide
an answer to any range of power challenges.
Marathon’s latest product, the SuperCapacitor
UPS, (proudly featuring “Green” Technology”)
is an ideal solution for immediate and reliable power
when outages like this occur and where bridge power
is needed for critical equipment until the startup
of a generator source. Since generators start within
a few seconds to a minute, the required holdup time
is relatively short making the Supercap
UPS ideal since it does not contain any batteries!
They are ideal for applications
such as Server Rooms, Medical & Healthcare, Emergency
Responders, Utilities, and other critical government
and Municipal services.
Marathon Power currently serves over 40 different
types of industries (IT and Telecommunications companies,
OEM, industrial automation and manufacturing facilities,
Security and Banking, corporations, medium and small
businesses - locally, statewide and federally). They
will assess your situation and recommend the right
solution so losses of work, product, inventory, and
man-hours as well as compromises in safety are never
an issue for your company again.
